Baharestan Leather

Leatherwork · Central Afghanistan · Est. 2013

A leatherworking shop hand-stitching bags, journal covers, and belts from vegetable-tanned leather, using saddle-stitch construction throughout.

Baharestan Leather works exclusively in vegetable-tanned leather, which the shop says ages better and takes a more natural patina than chrome-tanned alternatives.

Every seam in the shop's work is hand saddle-stitched rather than machine-sewn — a slower method, but one that means a seam won't fully unravel even if a single stitch is cut.

The shop's satchels and bags are built around a small number of proven patterns rather than one-off designs, which keeps sizing and hardware placement consistent across pieces.

Brass hardware — buckles, rivets, corner protectors — is sourced from a metalworker the shop has used for years, and the same hardware appears across the whole product line for a consistent look.
