Amina

Bamyan

“Now, I am very happy, and they are happy too.”

Amina was born into a strict, conservative family in Bamyan province that restricted her education. At 13 she was forced to marry a man 55 years her senior; she became a mother shortly after and was widowed at 19.

Her son encouraged her to pursue education. She enrolled in tailoring and literacy courses, and leveraging her interest in handicrafts, sold personal jewelry to establish a tailoring and literacy center focused on widows and girls.

Enrollment grew steadily. When Taliban restrictions closed educational institutions to girls, her center became an important alternative learning space — one of the few places locally where girls could still study.
